The Finance department provides a broad range of financial and accounting services to both faculty and administration.
Position Description:

Works independently in performing the duties of the position, under the general direction of the Controller.

Responsibilities may include: Preparing and analyzing monthly and annual reconciliations for multiple funds and accounts. Participating in the monthly close reconciliation and financial reporting process. Preparing and analyzing schedules for the Form 990 tax reporting and the annual indirect cost proposal. Preparing HHMI invoices, journals, and reconciliation for accounts receivable. Maintaining accounting records and preparing federal/state tax returns for SICSC and La Jolla Biological Laboratories. Preparing annual Form 5500 for Plans 501 and 510. Managing TEM (Travel and Exp Management) system and training users. Analyzing data and preparing annual Form 1099's and 592-B's. Preparing and analyzing year-end audit schedules. Preparing monthly sales tax reports. Reviewing coding of contributions and preparing monthly reconciliation of contributions recorded by Finance with Development's reports. Maintaining fixed assets system. Processing and analyzing monthly recharges from core facilities and other shared service departments. Maintaining, analyzing, and reconciling accounts receivable (internal and external). Processing, depositing, and journalizing cash receipts. Ensures confidentiality of information, follows accounting principles, and exercises sound judgment.

Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience in accounting, payroll or finance.
Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in accounting or finance.
  • Must have the ability to interpret reports and analyze data with attention to detail.
  • Must have strong problem solving skills including the ability to recommend options and implement solutions.

Preferred:

  • Experience with SunGard Banner finance system.
  • Leadership experience.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed and occasionally work a flexible schedule based on workload and deadlines. Peak times include month-end and year-end close, and audits. Must be willing to work at a location away from the main campus (but within walking distance) and travel to and from campus as needed (parking is available at both locations).
  • Successful completion of the Institute‚Äôs background investigation.
  • Willing to sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
