The Flow Cytometry Core facility is dedicated to advancing research projects requiring cell sorting and/or analysis of cell populations by flow cytometry. The core offers training on and access to shared use instrumentation for analytical flow cytometry, services for fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) as well as technical consultation and support on experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
Position Description:

The Salk Institute Flow Cytometry Core Facility is recruiting a Flow Cytometry Specialist to assist in the daily operation of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility. The Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides cell-sorting and analysis services and support to the whole institute. The Flow Cytometry Specialist supports core facility staff and provides assistance in the overall workflow including calibration, operation, and maintenance of all core instruments. The Flow Cytometry Specialist is responsible for providing guidance and assistance to new and existing facility users and will have the opportunity to work on several different BD platforms.



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent work experience.


  • Advanced degree in biological science.


  • Minimum 2 years general work experience.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in flow cytometry techniques and principles of operation.
  • Experience preparing samples autonomously for flow cytometry, demonstrable proficiency at data acquisition/analysis of samples.
  • Proficiency/autonomous operation of BD analyzers and FACSDiva platforms.
  • Some supervisory experience.


  • Minimum 3 years general work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a core facility environment.
  • Some experience with cell sorting (operations of FACS instruments)
Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work in a biohazardous environment (BSL-2).
  • Must be able to work with high voltage equipment.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on research needs and deadlines.
  • Successful completion of the Institute‚Äôs background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires constant adjusting focus, touching/feeling, keying, grasping, talking, hearing, handling, reading, writing, calculating, reasoning, analyzing and communicating.
