Job Title: Catering Assistant

The Events Coordination department coordinates the logistics for events that support the Salk Institute community.
Position Description:

Salk is seeking a catering assistant an entry level position to join our events coordination team. This candidate must enjoy working in a collaborative and team-oriented environment. If this sounds like you, review details below and apply for the position.

Position assist all events on the Salk Institute campus including onsite staffing as needed. Candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Setting up events with appropriate tables and chairs
  • Properly breaking down events and rearranging event spaces
  • Washing dishes during and after an event
  • Maintaining stocked inventory
  • Delivering and picking up of catering/refreshments around campus
  • Presenting and promoting a positive image at all functions
  • Providing support and working closely with the Events Operations Lead
Education:

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience is required.

Experience:

Preferred:

  • One year of experience as a banquet captain or related operations position, performing all aspects of meeting room setup and breakdown, including but not limited to: setting up tables and chairs, linens and drapes, washing dishes, and related physical activities.
  • Work experience in a large (500+ employees) organization in a position requiring interface with internal and external clients.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on workload and deadlines including overtime as needed on evenings and weekends. Evening hours typically end by 8:00 p.m. but could run later.
  • Must have valid California driver’s license and must be willing to submit to a background investigation including motor vehicle review.
  • Must be of legal age to purchase and/or serve alcohol.
  • Post offer physical required.
  • Incumbent must acquire a Food Handler’s Certificate prior to start of work.
  • Willing to sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires constant seeing, adjusting focus, touching/feeling, grasping, talking, hearing, handling, lifting 0-50 pounds, pushing 0-20 pounds, reading, reasoning and communicating.
